Wood sealers can help you protect your wood from moisture, the sun’s harsh rays and other conditions created by the environment such as mildew. Here are a few tips to help create a protective barrier for your wood, ensuring its beauty long into the future…
First, you will want to prepare your wood’s surface by sanding it smooth and removing any imperfections.
Then, remove any dust and debris so that you are working with a clean surface.
The next step may be the most important – choosing your sealant based on intended use and wood type. For instance, you might choose a polycrylic water-based wood sealer for its low toxicity and because it dries quickly. Just keep in mind that polycrylics may take a while to cure. Oil-based polyurethane wood sealers are durable and scratch-resistant, making them an excellent choice for projects such as wood floors and furniture. Water-based polyurethane will dry faster, but will not be as resistant to moisture, scratching or high temperatures. There are also wood stain sealers that are offered in a variety of colors and semi-transparent combination stain and sealants which can beautifully accent wood’s natural grain.
After you choose the right wood sealer, apply evenly with a clean brush or sprayer, allowing to completely dry between coats if multiple coats are necessary.
Regularly repeat this process over time as needed to maintain your wood’s protective barrier.
