How to Enhance Wood Grain

I think we can all agree that the natural grain of wood is beautiful. So how do we enhance wood grain?

  • Much like a good spa day, “beauty treatments” are required to effectively enhance wood grain. Start by sanding with fine grit sandpaper. This will open up the wood pores and help to remove imperfections, both which can make wood grain more prominent. Just as you would brush your hair in one direction, each stroke of your light sanding should follow the natural grain of your wood. Using a sanding block and gentle, consistent strokes will yield the best results.
  • Don’t forget to dust your wood after sanding to ensure that no dust will be trapped between your wood and your finish. This may sound simple, but it is a very important step.
  • Next, to help facilitate stain absorption, providing you with a rich look, you can also apply wood conditioner. This is especially beneficial when working with hardwoods.
  • For a striking result, choose a stain that contrasts with the natural color of your wood. It is also important to note that if you are staining your wood, oil-based stains offer the best penetration for a deep color. Water-based stains have their pluses, but they are less intense. Be sure not to apply too much or you will end up masking your wood grain and if you choose oil-based stain, sanding sealer can help prevent it from soaking in too deeply.
  • Finishes such as polyurethane or varnish can also enhance your wood grain.
